We believe in total transparency. Here are quick answers to the most common questions our patient coordinator receive every day.

    Does a vasectomy hurt?

Dr. Benderev’s patients describe the procedure as painless thanks to his specialized No-Needle Jet Spray anesthesia. You may feel a quick, light “flick” against the skin or mild pressure/pulling during the 10-minute procedure. For added relaxation, Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) (link to page) is available at our Mission Viejo office.

    How long is recovery?

You can typically return to desk or office work at home later the very same day. If your job requires physical labor, heavy lifting, or strenuous activity, plan to take 7 days off – which will help assure an expected uneventful recovery. Full physical activity, exercise and sex can usually be resumed after 7 days.

    Can I drive myself home?

No, we strongly recommend arranging a ride home. While rare, some patients can experience lightheadedness or fainting after the procedure, which poses a serious driving risk.

Do I need to return for a follow-up appointment?

No in-office follow-up is required. You will simply use a mail-in kit to submit a semen analysis roughly 8 to 12 weeks after surgery to confirm the procedure was successful. More kits, as needed, are included. Dr. Benderev’s team will provide complete instructions before you leave.

    Will my insurance cover it?

Yes, vasectomy is typically covered by most insurance plans as a preventive procedure. You can check your specific benefits on our Cost and Insurance Page.
