Pro-Nox™ Nitrous Oxide System

We are pleased to offer our patients the option of Pro-NoxTM Nitrous Oxide sedation during their vasectomy procedure.. Nitrous Oxide, commonly referred to as "laughing gas," is a commonly used and safe office anesthetic that can assist in making patients more comfortable and less anxious during a vasectomy. Its use is entirely optional, as many patients have undergone the procedure by Dr. Benderev without Nitrous Oxide, typically experiencing negligible to no pain. If, after reviewing the following description, you decide to utilize Nitrous Oxide during your vasectomy, we will be happy to accommodate this preference. Please note that there will be an additional out-of-pocket expense of $95, due at the time of the procedure, as this amount is generally not covered by insurance. This fee covers the use of Nitrous Oxide and its associated equipment and supplies.

The Pro-Nox™ Nitrous Oxide System is currently available ONLY at the
Mission Viejo location
.

Important Information Regarding Nitrous Oxide:

  • The gas consists of a blend of Nitrous Oxide and oxygen.
  • You will breathe the Nitrous Oxide through a mouthpiece, which you typically hold yourself, allowing you to control the effect.
  • The effects of sedation and anesthesia are felt very quickly, usually within seconds to a few minutes.
  • Expected sensations include relaxation, calmness, and mild euphoria. Some patients describe it as a light, floating sensation.
  • Nitrous Oxide helps alleviate any anxiety or discomfort during the procedure.

Possible Side Effects:

  • Nitrous Oxide is considered generally safe with minimal side effects, if any. Temporary effects may include lightheadedness, tingling, headache, mild nausea. These symptoms typically disappear quickly once the gas is discontinued.

Benefits During a Vasectomy:

  • Reduces anxiety: It can significantly ease nervousness or apprehension regarding the procedure.
  • Minimizes any discomfort: While local anesthesia is used to numb the procedure area, Nitrous Oxide can further reduce the perception of pain.
  • You will remain awake and responsive throughout the vasectomy.
  • Quick onset and offset: It works rapidly as you breathe it in and clears from your system within minutes after cessation, allowing you to feel normal and leave shortly after the procedure.

Dr. Benderev can provide further information about Nitrous Oxide during your consultation.
